How to Transfer Your Domain with Wix

If you’re not too keen on your domain registrar and are considering transferring your domain using Wix, you’ve come to the right place.

One of the first, but often understated, steps to creating an engaging website is choosing the right domain name. Since the best domain names sell like hotcakes if you don’t grab your cut soon, you’ll either have to settle for the second best choice or pay a high price if the owner is willing to sell it.

However, finding the right domain won’t be enough if your current domain provider doesn’t provide the services and support you need. Although we often see a domain name registrar and web hosting services combined, this is not a rule – you can choose one provider for the site and another for the domain.

Also, although some providers send a technical team to handle the domain transfer for you, this is not the case with most pocket picks. So, to give you a hand, we’ll go through the steps of transferring a domain name and since Wix is one of the most popular website builder solutions out there, we’ll be using Wix.

Does Wix charge for domain transfer?

Although Wix does not charge for domain name transfers per se, for them to be “free” you must purchase at least one additional year of domain registration. However, we must point out that Wix will not directly charge you any additional fees for transferring your domain to this one.

The cheapest and most basic “premium” site builder plan with Wix is ”Connect Domain” and for $4.50 per month it will give you the option to transfer and use your own domain, but it is comes with severe restrictions (a measly 1GB of bandwidth and 500MB of storage space) and Wix branding.

So if you think about the overall cost, that’s the bare minimum you need to buy to be able to transfer your domain name to Wix – plus an extra year of domain registration.

Transferring a Domain from GoDaddy to Wix

To start the domain transfer process, you must first obtain the authorization code (EPP) from your GoDaddy domain registrar and you can do so by following a few simple steps.

First, log into your GoDaddy account and find the username at the top corner of the page. Next, select the “My Products” section and click the “Manage” button next to the domain you wish to transfer. Then locate the “Additional settings” section and click the “Get authorization code” button – it will be sent to your email address.

We should note that if you registered the domain name recently, it will not be available for transfer for the first 60 days – so the second best option is to connect it instead.

After that, the transfer process follows the same path as with all other domain name registrars and as discussed in one of the previous chapters.

final thought

There are many reasons why you would want to register your domain name with GoDaddy rather than Wix and most of these reasons stem from the fact that domains from GoDaddy are very reasonably priced.

So if you’re still thinking about transferring your old domain to Wix, get your hands dirty and get started right away – or, if you registered your domain just minutes ago, add a reminder to do so in 60 days or so. .
